An observation about friends who played the piano as kids | May 5, 2024
I recently started playing the piano, and the first few weeks of lessons were predominantly concerned with me playing simple five-note scales while keeping all my fingers glued to the piano. This simple-sounding task turned out to be incredibly difficult for me since I kept having the urge to "tap" the keys instead of keeping them glued. My sense of why this might be the case is that when I type, I tend to "tap" the keys while keeping my hands hovered above the keyboard. When discussing this with my friends who have played the piano since they were kids, they apparently type with all their fingers glued to the keyboard! Seems like depending on whether you learn to play the piano or type first, it informs your style of doing the other.
